Herstmonceaux Castle BN27 1RN is situated just north of Eastbourne. The moated castle dates from 1441 and is one of the earliest examples of a brick built building in the UK still exisiting. The castle remained in private ownership until 1946 when it was purchased by the Admirality for the Royal Observatory. In 1965 it was transferred to the Science Research Council until it went into receivership in 1989. It was then purchased by Queens University, Ontario in 1993 and has been used as an educational facility since. A short walk away is the Royal Observatory. The castle has undergone recent works which meant that we could not visit last year however it has now reopened and we can enjoy a visit this year. There is a walled garden and woodland trails as well as the castle itself.
