The Tanners were Jolly

MGs at the Jolly Tanners in Staplefield

What is possible after 1913?

Why is this pig flying?

When was the Iguanadon found?

All these are questions to be found in the lanes and villages of Sussex during the Centre’s Spring Naviscat event. The answers were “Going to the loo”, “because it’s on a weathervane” and “1822” all to be found at the location carefully plotted using a six point OS map reference by those taking part.

The Naviscat was blessed with some fine weather so the map plotting could be done outside of the Jolly Tanners pub in Staplefield. The pub had provided bacon butties and tea/coffee for those starters as they hunched over their OS 198 maps.

The points were plotted the crews set off into the surrounding countryside. Some went north, some south all aiming for a circular route covering as many plot points as possible. This Naviscat was similar to the last in that there were often several clues to be found at one location – this meant less travelling and more walking about hunting for the answers. But some of those clues could be elusive and competitors are not expected to find all of them – it would be an impossible task to visit all the location in the 3 1/4 hours allowed in any case.

The answers gathered the competitors headed back to the Jolly Tanners. There was a breakdown when an MGA stuttered to a halt not far from Handcross and spent the rest of the day waiting for the AA recovery. Sadly they missed out on the lunch back at the pub.

Ron Kemp stepped in at short notice and helped Austin Banner with the marking as Philip Roussel-Smith was helping our broken down entrant. With the scores calculated the winners were announced. As with most of these events the winners on the day may not have been the exact results after adjudication checking later. The final results were:-
