SE Centre wins the Nuffield Gold Cup

The MG Car Club’s most prestigious honour is the Nuffield Gold Cup. It is awarded annually to the Centre, Register or Branch which has shown outstanding achievement.

The cup was originally donated to the MG Car Club by Lord Nuffield in 1936, and its original purpose was inscribed on the cup itself:-

“Awarded annually

To

The Centre of the M.G. Car Club

Which Has Shewn

The Most Meritorious Growth

Enthusiasm and Enterprise.”

The ethos is still the same but in 1936 there were only four centres and today the field is much wider with all the Centres, Registers and Branches included. This is the 14th time that the Centre has won the award, but unsurprisingly, most of those occasions were in the very early days. The Centre, however, did win it in 1966, 1967, 1971 and lastly in 1980. This is the first time it has been presented to us in 45 years, a true honour.

The Gold trophy was presented to the South East Centre Chairman, Tim Morris, and the Centre Secretary, Austin Banner by the MGCC President, John Day, at the October Council Meeting and AGM.

The trophy was awarded for the effort and enthusiasm that the Centre displayed when organising the Centenary celebration in 2024 – MG100 South East. This event took place over a long weekend in May 2024 and included links into the MG Cavalcade of that year, a Summer MG picnic at the Fairmile in Cobham, five separate road runs and a full show day at Brooklands Museum. There were talks, games, contests, jazz bands, concours, timelines, anniversary cars and much more over the weekend.

It was all put together by a dedicated team from the South East Centre aided by local MG Owners Clubs, beginning two years in advance of the event.

The team thanks the MG Car Club for its recognition of the mighty effort that was put in to create this wonderful event.
