We seem to have an annual visit to a preserved railway in the South East and for 2025 we are doing it in miniature – the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Railway.
This ever-popular railway runs along the Kent coast and you can easily get lost all day on the trains but look out for the special engine featuring the MG Car Club South East header celebrating 95 years of the MG Car Club.
Trains will be running all day and we will join them at New Romney station where we have a sectioned off part of the car park to display our MGs.
The Railway was the result of a dream held by Capt. Howey and Count Zborowski, both racing drivers who had driven at Brooklands – Zborowski was the owner of the original Chitty Bang Bang cars made famous by Ian Fleming with an extra Chitty!) Sadly, Zborowski died in a fatal motor racing accident before seeing the railway open in 1927. Capt. Howey continued the project alone and ran the railway for many years.
Today trains operate along the whole 13.5mile route and you are free to take rides as you wish. There are cafes and pubs along the route but we might suggest the cafe at Dungeness where the trains turn around – or simply take a picnic!
Our visit will celebrate 95 years of the MG Car Club only three years short of the railway itself! We will also be raising funds for our charity – Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and you can make a voluntary donation online or cash on the day.
