The Carrisima Cup is an older trophy of the Centre. It disappeared for many years and was then spotted on E-Bay by eagle eyed committee member Will Opie. He purchased it back for the Centre. It is a small solid silver cup without a base .
In the 1961 it was one of a number of cups awarded for the Abingdon Rally. A SE Centre Bulletin from May 1962 shows it awarded to M. Sokel and A. Harmer in an MG TD, although it is not clear what it was actually for. There were other cups awarded, including the “University Motors Trophy” and “The Rosebud Cup” both of which we do not know the whereabouts. They were awarded to Sunbeam Rapiers so may have moved out of club hands, like the Carissima Cup. Will is still watching e-bay!
The reason for the unusual name is also not known but in Italian it means “Dearest”. We think it became separated from its base at some point so we have no record of the previous winners but are searching archives for mentions of it, as above.
Once back with the South East Centre the cup was used for a new award from 2023 – The Carissima Spirit of the Club. The intention was to reward a person or persons who best epitomised the ethos of the club and demonstrated the “spirit” of MG. It’s a subjective award chosen by the Chairman upon suggestions from natters leaders and committee.
